Hello my dear friends! It’s been a while since I posted on my blog and at least each blog hop brings me back to this place. Most of you are connected with me meanwhile at facebook where we meet every single day and exchange ideas and inspiration.
What I have to tell today is way too long for a facebook post. I’m gonna talk about what’s going on right now here at the Zen Chic Studio, chat about some quilt layout ideas and give you all details about how to win a Fat Eighth fabric bundle of my current line FIGURES.

So first let’s talk a bit about quilt layouts. When we, the Moda team, are at Market, we have a kind of presentation there (called Schoolhouse) where we all show the newest fabrics and patterns. And to find a mutual subject, Lissa, our Marketing Director, sends out each time a task to everyone. Actually it is the same task for everyone, but of course we will show our personal twist on it.
In Pittsburgh Schoolhouse our task was to sew a quilt (looks like a mega block) with a layer cake from our fabric line. Each person had that same quilt layout as a starter, but ended up with her personal interpretation on it.
So that was our original layout – the Moda Love Layer Cake Quilt  (which you can download as a free pattern here).

Of course I wanted to interpret this block in a more modern way, so I started to exchange plain squares by simple Lob Cabins to form some Pluses, to turn some blocks around and give them another direction – and to make it even more impressive to arrange the prints in color order.
I eventually ended up with a version, which looks quite modern and definitely needed an own pattern ;-)
I called it BIG PLUS and it’s now available in my pattern series.

And then we do also more fun stuff at Markets, this year for example we were all sewing scientists (at least pretending scientists) working in the Moda Laboratory. We wore a Lab Coat and taught our audience about our tips and tricks. Would you like to get to know Prof. Dr. Dr. Zen Chic from the Institute for Sophisticated Quilting? Voilà.
My new line Figures has a maritime color way with a nautical blue, aqua, salmon, linen and saffron in it and the patterns in the line are as always graphic and fresh. I was playing around a bit with sorting the fabrics by colors and figuring out how different a quilt would look if I just scale the complete range of fabrics down to certain color stories. I was surprised by the many variations I got:
I could have a serious and way of masculine look with the saffron/nautical combination

or a very feminine look by choosing the salmons and linens

but it could also be jus a youthful combination for a teenager with the aquas and reds.

or it would look lovely for a boys nursery… (BTW: I will become grandma of a little boy for the first time. Next January, so happy!!!)

I could play for hours to find new combinations… But I’m sure you have your own ideas and imagination and you will come up with projects that surprise me and make me oohing and aahing. (I love when you send me some pictures, which I can show).

For all the members of Quilter’s Garden I wrote a tutorial for a very special book cover. It’s made from YOUR fabric. You just design something on your PC, iron a white piece of fabric on a sheet of freezer paper, and print it out on your PC’s printer. Fix the colors by ironing the fabric very hot – and make your very personal gift: A diary, a planner, a notebook or cover a book of poems for your beloved one.

Diese Bilder meiner kleinen Küchenfee muss ich einfach mal zeigen. Obwohl Ben recht entspannt dabei ist und sogar ein Liedchen vor sich hinpfeift, ist natürlich nicht zu übersehen, wieviel Mühe er sich gibt, die perfekt geformten Kokosmakronen aufs Blech zu bekommen. Und – im täglichen Training bei einer Multitaskingmutter – arbeitet er supereffizient und klebt schon die ersten Liebesperlen auf seine fertige Ladung während die zweite noch im Backofen gart. Er weiß doch genau, dass ich ihn für ein schlaues Kerlchen halte, oder?

Stripped Hexagon Bag

Inspired by the cute idea of Jodi’s Etsy-bag I tried to get my own version of this colorful beauty. Mine is a bit smaller, perfect to host my knitting work. But I like also Jodi’s idea for a larger baby-accessory-version: Filled with toys or nappies you can bring it with you everywhere and then lay it out as a play mat.

Inspiriert von der netten Idee von Jodi’s Etsy-bag habe ich meine eigene Variante dieser farbenfrohen Schönheit fabriziert. Meine ist etwas kleiner, genau richtig um mein Strickzeug zu transportieren. Aber ich mag auch die ursprüngliche Idee von Jodi: Eine Babydecke, die man – gefüllt mit Spiel- und Wickelsachen überall mithinnehmen kann, und dort ausgebreitet als Spielmatte dient.

Triangle Purse

Recently my eyes caught some nice fabric triangle purses while surfing the internet at craftpassion.com. The idea comes from those yummy rice wraps.

 
I’m not from Asia but I’m also familiar with these pyramid shapes since my childhood: I’ve got some orange juice packages in my school bag, called Sunkist.

 

 

 

Ok, here are the ones I made from fabric. You could put some candies inside or some coins or your lipstick. And they are pretty easy to sew. I made a tutorial, members can find it at Quilter’s Garden.

And wait – there’s another thing I’d like to share. Strolling over Soest’s fabric market I found a booth of jewelry. I couldn’t resist to this cute necklace which's beads look like little globes. What do you think? Great idea, or? Just paper glued on wooden beads.

Beim Surfen durchs Internet fand ich neulich hübsche kleine Stofftäschchen bei craftpassion.com. Die Idee für die Form stammt von Reis Wraps, die wie kleine Pyramiden verpackt sind. Solche Pyramidenformen kenne ich aus meiner eigenen Kindheit: damals in den 70er Jahren hatten wir Sunkist Orangensafttrinkpäckchen.

Meine Stofftäschchen sind der ideale Platz für einige Bonbons, etwas Kleingeld oder meinen Lippenstift und ich hab ein deutsches Tutorial geschrieben, Mitglieder können es bei Quilter’s Garden downloaden.

Und dann fand ich noch eine Halskette beim Bummel über den Soester Stoffmarkt, der ich einfach nicht widerstehen konnte. Ihre Perlen sehen aus wie lauter kleine Globen. Ist die nicht einfach klasse? Die Handwerkerin hat mir erzählt, dass dafür Holzperlen mit Papier beklebt werden. Hmmmm…

How to use your left over quilt blocks

Sometimes we start with a project, sew some nice blocks, but for any reasons we don't manage to finish our project and make a quilt from the blocks.
To make the best of those blocks pick your favorites out and frame them in a picture frame without glass. So they are not lost or wasted and add a decorative effect to your wall.

Manchmal beginnt man mit einem Projekt, näht voll Begeisterung einige Blöcke und schafft es dann aus irgendeinem Grund doch nicht, das ganze zu einem Quilt fertig zu machen.
Um das beste aus den schon genähten Blöcken zu machen: Nimm deine Lieblingsstücke und rahme sie in schlichten Bilderrahmen ohne Glas. So sind sie nicht verschwendet und verloren, sondern geben dem Raum noch einen dekorativen Effekt.

Silk Necklace Tutorial

Brighten up your your summer wardrobe with a a soft, braided necklace made from sherbet shades of Dupioni silk. Here is how to.

Ein schlichtes und einfaches Sommerkleid wird durch diese Seidenbandhalsketten exquisit. Dafür werden von Duponseide Streifen abgerissen, jeweils 2,5 cm breit. Die ausgefransten Seiten der Bänder geben den weichen Look der Kette. Jeweils drei Stoffstreifen werden einfach miteinander verflochten. Endet ein Streifen, bevor man die gewünschte Kettenlänge erreicht hat, näht man mit ein paar Stichen einen weiteren Streifen an. Diese Ketten haben eine Länge von etwa 150 cm und können mehrfach um den Hals geschlungen werden.

Last month I bought a new camera. Beautiful photos have ever caught my eyes and when I find a bit of time, my camera is my favorite toy these days. (Since I've turned my hobby into a profession two years ago, I now have to have a new hobby, right? *g*).
A camera needs a nest, a home where it is save and sleeps weakly. And a quilter’s camera needs a very personal, sewn nest. At "sew-mad" I found this camera bag tutorial to share.

Letzten Monat hab ich mir eine neue Kamera gekauft. Schöne Fotos haben mich schon immer fasziniert, und wenn ich ein bisschen Zeit habe, dann ist die Kamera grade mein liebstes Spielzeug. (Da ich ja mein Hobby seit zwei Jahren zum Beruf gemacht habe, muss ich doch jetzt ein neues Hobby haben, oder? *g*).

Eine Kamera braucht ein Nest, ein Zuhause wo es weich und sicher ist. Und eine Quilter-Kamera braucht ein sehr persönliches, genähtes Nest. Bei „sew-mad“ gibt es ein prima „Camera bag Tutorial“.
Es ist zwar komplett in Englisch geschrieben, aber die Skizzen sind hilfreich, und ich denke, man kommt damit auch ohne Englischkenntnisse zurecht.

Ideas for modern quilting

I’m going to be off for the next two weeks and spend some summer days with my family. So I will provide you with some inspiration and ideas I found from other people on the net.

One of the things I found are these super cute turtles to sew.

They grabbed my attention because my daughter recently became a turtle mom. She has a passion for all kind of pets (we've had rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, budgies, fish, cats - you name it.) And now a turtle. Because one doesn’t not know whether it is a girl or a boy, the turtle got a neutral name – it’s called "fish bread" - you can’t do anything wrong with this. Fish bread gets everything it loves - freshly picked dandelions and sun warmed stones for lounging around.
By the way: my sewed turtle doesn’t need sun warmed stones. I can now comfortably leave for vacancies without having someone to care for and feed it. For me, a definite plus ...

In den nächsten zwei Wochen werde ich mir einige Tage frei nehmen, um Zeit mit meiner Familie in den Sommerwochen zu verbringen. Deshalb zeigt mein Blog Inspirationen und Ideen von anderen aus dem Netz.

Und ich habe diese supersüßen genähten Schildkröten gefunden, ein Tutorial dafür gibt es hier.

Ich konnte nicht daran vorbeigehen, weil meine Tochter, vor kurzem eine Schildkrötenmama geworden ist.
Sie hat eine Leidenschaft für sämtliche Arten von Haustieren (wir hatten schon Kaninchen, Meerschweinchen, Mäuse, Ratten, Wellensittiche, Fische, Katzen). Und nun eine Schildkröte. Weil man noch nicht weiß, ob es ein Mädchen oder ein Junge ist, hat die Schildkröte den neutralen Namen „Fischbrötchen“ – da kann man gar nichts falsch machen. Sie kriegt alles, was sie liebt – frisch gepflückten Löwenzahn und von der Sonne aufgewärmte Steine zum drauf Räkeln.

Meine Stoffschildkröte braucht übrigens keine sonnenaufgewärmten Steine. Ich kann jetzt auch bequem in Urlaub fahren, ohne dass jemand auf sie aufpassen und sie füttern muss. Für mich ein absolutes Plus…

Tutorial for fabric luggage tags

Summer time - travel time, suitcases are to be packed and on my last shopping tour there were some catching my eye, which I simply had to take with me: A wonderful fresh blue – goodbye to the old black ones. And now – what about a little bit cream on the top: adding cute luggage tags? Those I have discovered a while ago browsing at Interweave (an idea from Helen Gregory) and I couldn’t resist. So here is how I did mine.

BTW: If there's a catchy tune, is there perhaps such a thing like a catchy view too, something you see over and over again? For me right now it seems to be the combination of azure blue with red, I thought my tags should contrast with the luggage quite a bit.

Materials:
Two fabric rectangles for front and back: each 4 ½“ x 6 ¼“
For strap: 1 strip 2“ x 14“
2 rectangles of heavyweight stabilizer: each 3 ½“ x 5 ¼“
clear plastic vinyl for name pocket: 2 ½“ x 4“
name card: 2“ x 3 ½“
glue stick

1. Center one stabilizer rectangle on the wrong side of the front fabric rectangle.
2. Apply glue along the edges of the stabilizer rectangle and wrap the edges of the fabric rectangle up and over the edges of the stabilizer.
3. Repeat this process with the second stabilizer rectangle and the back fabric.
4. To make a pocket for the name / address card, center the clear plastic rectangle on the right side of the front fabric. Topstitch close to the edge around three sides, leaving one short side open.
5. To prepare the strap, fold the concerning fabric stripe lengthwise; press. Then open the strip and fold each long side in to meet the fold line; press. Topstitch close to the edge along both lengthwise edges.
6. Layer the two prepared rectangles, wrong sides together. Fold the strap in half and tuck the raw ends in between the wrong sides of the rectangles, centering the strap along one of the short sides.
7. Topstitch around all four sides, being sure to catch the strap in the seam.

And now I'm looking forward to my next trip to Vienna with my two favorite suitcases!

   

Sommerzeit – Reisezeit, die Koffer werden gepackt und bei meinem letzten Einkauf sind mir welche ins Auge gestochen, die ich einfach mitnehmen musste. Wunderbares frisches blau, raus mit den alten verstaubten Schwarzen. Und jetzt noch ein schönes Kofferlable dran. Diese hier habe ich mal vor einiger Zeit beim Stöbern bei Interweave entdeckt, die Idee stammt von Helen Gregory und ich fand sie so schön, dass ich hier mal ein Tutorial dafür vorstelle.

Wenn es einen Ohrwurm gibt, gibt es dann eigentlich auch so etwas wie einen Augenwurm, etwas was man überall und immer wieder sieht? Bei mir scheint es gerade die Kombination azurblau mit rot zu sein: denn die Labels – fand ich – sollten ruhig ein bisschen kontrastieren.

Was man braucht:
Quiltstoff für die Vorder- und Rückseite: je 1 Stück 4 ½“ x 6 ¼“
für das Bändchen: 1 Streifen 2“ x 14“
starke Bügeleinlage: 2 Stücke, 3 ½“ x 5 ¼“
ein Stück Plastik (aus einer Sichthülle geschnitten): 2 ½“ x 4“
Adresskärtchen: 2“ x 3 ½“
Textilkleber

1. Ein Rechteck der Bügeleinlage auf die linke Seite des Vorderseitenstoffs zentriert aufbügeln.
2. Klebstoff auf die überstehenden Stoffkanten auftragen, und die Kanten um die Bügeleinlage herumschlagen und festdrücken (bügeln).
3. Auf dieselbe Weise wird die Rückseite vorbereitet.
4. Für die kleine Adressetikettentasche auf der Vorderseite wird das Plastikstückchen zentriert in der Mitte festgesteppt, wobei eine schmale Seite offen bleibt.
5. Für das Bändchen wird der Streifen längs zur Mitte gefaltet und gebügelt. Dann wieder geöffnet und die Kanten zum Mittelkniff hin gefaltet, gebügelt und dann knappkantig abgesteppt.
6. Die Vorder- und Rückseite werden nun links auf links aufeinander gelegt, wobei man das Bändchen an einer schmalen Seite mittig dazwischen fasst. Anschließend rundherum knappkanting absteppen. Voilà – fertig!

Und ich freu mich auf meine nächste Reise nach Wien mit den zwei Gute-Laune-Koffern!

This one is sewn in an afternoon, and with some lovely fabrics it could become your summer favorite. By the way, many (quilt) fabrics from well known designers are available as water-repellent laminate also – which makes a perfect bag lining for all the wet suits.

Die Sommerferien stehen vor der Tür, die Freibadsaison lockt und eine tolle Badetasche wäre jetzt genau das Richtige. Diese hier ist ruck-zuck genäht und könnte mit dem aktuellen Lieblingsstoff der Taschenfavorit des Sommers werden. Übrigens gibt es inzwischen von ganz vielen Quiltstoffdesignern die Stoffe auch als wasserabweisendes Laminat – prädestiniert als Innenseite für die nassen Badesachen.
